This past Sunday, I was asked to come take photos at a Makeover Event at Bolt barbershop in DTLA. The event was being spearheaded by none other than my good friend Ashley Sugarman, with the support and backing of the organization she is so diligently working alongside called Homeless Health Care of Los Angeles. Her mission is to bring Art's and Entertainment to the less fortunate. With this event practically collapsing in the middle stages of planning, Ashley, and her inspiring "Don't take no for an answer!" mentality, pulled it through to fruition and more. She had Hair stylists, makeup artists and celebrity Fashion stylists from LA and NY all ready to service some of Los Angeles' homeless men and women to give them a treat; a break even from the daily confines of life's circumstances.
Two nights before the event I went with Ashley to organize the Heaps of Donated Clothing and Shoes, and that's where I got to intimately take it all in. There was so much merchandise, most of which still had tags on them. A lot of it wasn't even used. Fashion PR companies and Showrooms donated a lot of their gear to support such a great event. Each homeless person that would walk through the doors on Sunday would get to pick as many outfits as they could possibly carry back with them and get mega star treatment as well! I knew I was in the right place, and I'm not even talking about being in that faux janitor closet at that barbershop with bags and bags of clothing everywhere. Like my hubby always says when life brings natural fulfillment, "I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be!"
I was having a blast watching the glam team makeover these lovely men and women. It was really touching when you could see the natural expressions of gratitude they would exhibit at the kindness and generosity that was being shown to them! Most importantly, they were having fun!
There was a woman named Nancy that was there with her two younger daughters. She shared that she fights daily with feelings of Unworthiness and has a hard time wrapping her head around anything good that happens to her and her family. We urged her to put that aside and to just soak it all in. I fought back the tears, unsuccessfully, when she expressed how utterly grateful she was for this experience and for her daughters to have experienced this with her. They all got glammed up and the girls mentioned they wanted to do good in school so that they could help each other out of the rut and treat themselves and their mom to the pampering every once in a while!! So touching and Humbling!
Some may criticize that Vanity is the wrong avenue to try and inspire and motivate people, but I'm a firm believer in feeling good inside and out! Its easy to agree that its not the cure all for all of life's problems, but truth is no one has those answers. The majority of you reading this today are probably in a position to indulge in life's little miracles that come in the form of a facial, a mani/pedi, a haircut, and/or retail therapy...and I can guarantee that half of you probably take that for granted sometimes.
I'm happy and feel extremely blessed to have been able to shed a little sunlight on some lives by means of an industry I came to appreciate later on in my 20's. From my previous and current work in fashion to my most recent involvement in the fitness industry, I stand behind all things wellbeing! I commend my friend Ashley Sugarman as well as all the volunteers that shared their time and talents to give back to our fellow brothers and sisters in need! People like you continuously make me want to be a better human being! :)
Special shoutout to the vendors and companies that contributed in some way or another! Thanks a Million for your ongoing support and dedication to humanity. Major Apologies if I missed anyone.
